When a baby tooth comes out earlier than it should, the space it leaves behind does not always stay put. A space maintainer keeps that gap the right size until the permanent tooth arrives.

What a parent usually notices first
It is rarely the gap itself that raises a flag. A baby tooth is knocked out early, lost to decay, or comes out on its own well ahead of schedule, and for a while nothing seems different. Then the teeth on either side of the space start to lean or drift toward it, closing the room the permanent tooth was supposed to grow into.
Other signs show up alongside it: teeth that look like they are shifting compared to a few months ago, a bite that feels off when your child chews, or crowding starting to show in a mouth that used to have plenty of space. Any of those, on their own, is reason enough to have it looked at.

Why holding the space matters
Left alone, that drifting is what turns into overcrowding and misalignment once the permanent tooth finally comes in, because there is no longer enough room for it. A space maintainer heads that off while it is still simple, and it also gives the jaw room to develop naturally and keeps the remaining teeth steady in the meantime.
It is also, plainly, the more affordable path. Catching this early with a space maintainer costs far less than the orthodontic work needed to correct crowding after the fact.
