When a filling is not enough tooth left to work with
A crown comes up in one of a few situations, decay that has gone too far for a filling to fix, a fracture from a fall or a bite on something hard, a tooth that has already had a baby root canal, or a tooth that has been filled so many times there is not enough natural structure left to hold another filling.
None of those situations is unusual for a child's mouth, and none of them means the tooth is a lost cause. It means the tooth needs a different kind of repair than the one it has already had.

The tooth is shaped to make room for the crown, and the crown is custom fitted over what remains of the natural tooth, restoring it to its original shape and giving your child the full use of it again for biting and chewing.
A crown holds up to daily use in a way a large filling in the same spot would not, which is exactly why it is the stronger option once a tooth has been through this much. It also has the best survival rate of any restoration following a baby root canal.

Why the stronger repair is worth it
A crowned tooth is a saved tooth. It keeps doing its job of holding space and letting your child chew normally until the permanent tooth underneath is ready to take over on its own schedule.
It also stops the decay that damaged it in the first place from getting a second chance at that same tooth. If your child has a tooth that has already had work done on it and is hurting again, call the Bartlett office and have it checked.
